Historical background
The College of Arts and Sciences offers four years of academic
work beyond the secondary level. These courses which have
been granted government recognition are the following:
1. Bachelor of Arts I-II (Established in )1947
2. Bachelor of Arts III-IV (1962) majors in:
- Political Science
- English
- Mass Communication- 1985
- Economics
3. Bachelor of Science in Tourism I-IV (1986|)
4. Bachelor of Science in Psychology I-IV (1994)
5. Hotel and Restaurant Management I-IV (1994)
In 2006, BS Tourism and HRM became a separate college Today,CAS has maintained three programs—AB Political Science, AB Communications, and BS Psychology. The first two years of the course provide the student abroad base of foundation as preparation for the major field of concentration in the last two years. Thus, arts and sciences student receives broad arts and sciences education, a degree of specialization, and a more or less diversified sampling of the other areas of human knowledge.
General Objectives
The main purpose of the college as an institution of learning is to provide education that ensures the promotion of culture in a Filipino setting as well as the global one, the welfare of the society and the total development of man geared towards the attainment of eternal salvation. Specifically the program is designed to help the student:
1.Cultivate an expansive breadth of learning toward the attainment of a more qualitative meaning of individual life as well as the promotion of the worthiness of life in a contemporary society;
2.Be a thinking person apprized of the truths and facts of reality;
3.Deepen his/her sensitivity toward scientific investigation, research and innovation;
4.Be informed of current issues and problems of the nation and evaluate them for the purpose of contributing solutions to them;
5.Acquire and practice various problem-solving, critical thinking and analytical skills that can be used in all areas of living and working;
6.Develop a perceptive sense of interdisciplinariness and world view;
7.Develop a strong cultural insight geared toward the stabilization of the Filipino culture and way of life and the judicious assimilation of the invaluable cultural heritage of other countries;
8.Become a human person sensitive to his/her own needs and those of his/her fellows and responsive to the urgent demands of his/her own community in particular, and the nation as a whole;
9.Become a morally upright, truth-seeking and truth-promulgating person.

Specific Objectives
PSYCHOLOGY AREA
For the students:
1.To acquire a comprehensive and insightful knowledge on the fundamental principles and theories of human behavior, utilizing the methods of scientific inquiry, critical thinking and contemporary approaches to learning, training and developing human behavior.
2.To acquire needed skills in the effective applications of psychological concepts and principles to actual behavioral situations in schools, industries, and clinical and mental health settings.
3.To assimilate and live the values of Christian service, self and community upliftment, and respect for the integrity and dignity of every human being as essential values to the development of human relationships and well-adjusted personalities.
4.To develop and nurture the values of social commitment, professionalism, work ethics, teamwork and leadership in one’s chosen field of endeavor.
5.To develop the attitudes of openness, objectivity, and a deep sense of commitment to be responsive to the challenges of individual and societal growth and development.
POLITICAL SCIENCE AREA
1.To instill in every student that there is much to learn from and appreciate in Philippine History and Culture which make the Filipinos a unique nation.
2.To provide a special background for other courses such as law, education, business and journalism, as these professions are closely interwoven with the affairs of the state.
3.To develop critical thinking among the students and hone their leadership skills making them competent professionals.
4.To develop in the students sensitivity to the social, political and economic realities prevailing in the Philippines.
5.To prepare the students to become productive and morally upright citizens and to participate effectively in national growth and development.
COMMUNICATION ARTS AREA
1.To produce Communication Arts graduates whose conceptual, technical and interpersonal skills are manifested through efficient and effective delivery systems of services in the various areas of communications and media.
2.To produce dedicated, flexible, dynamic, highly competitive, responsible and truly independent individuals who will work for different mass media.
3.To produce graduates who are always guided by truth, high ethical standards, professionalism and competence in their chosen fields in communication.
4.To inculcate the students with the right attitude and behavior consistent with the teachings of the Catholic Church and anchored on the Augustinian Philosophy of Education.
5.To instill in the students the values of truth, integrity, professionalism and social consciousness and involve them in nation building.
To actualize these objectives, the College of Arts and Sciences further adopts a well-coordinated teacher and student program which includes:
1.Research and community surveys with attention to the organization of data on the conditions, needs and resources of the community and how these can serve as a basis for institutional planning;
2.Provisions in the curriculum on the current educational thrusts of providing QUALITY CATHOLIC CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY-ORIENTED EDUCATION;
3.Course practicum and on-the-job-training program with linkages with various sub-systems of the community;
4.Co-curricular activities through functional student organizations geared toward leadership training, discipline, career orientation, job-placement, cultural growth, socio-economic growth, socio-economic mobility and responsible citizenship; and
5.In-service training courses for professionals, semi-professionals and non-professionals in the specific areas of communication, human dynamics and personality development.
